Is it illegal to use a professional bodies logo on your paperwork or website, like a travel agent using the ABTA logo when they aren't ABTA members?

Possibility of being seen as fraud. Don't know if the authorities would prosecute but I am sure the professional/trade body would.

Yes it's illegal - claiming to be a member of something that is in most cases a governing body and therefore being a legitimate member of such is seen as security against such fraud is well fraud.

In most cases members of such bodies are vetted for a reason.

either join and get the mark officially, or don't and don't use it.

If even one customer were to check if you were registered and you were not, it could cost you more than just 1 job.

Depends on the organisation/profession. It is illegal to claim you are in certain professions, but you could be prosecuted for copyright fraud at the very least if you claim to be a member of a certain organisation when you are not and then that organisation makes a claim against you. This is what bodies like NICEIC do.

Yeah - that is clearly "Fraud by False Representation"

Can I surmise that this is to do with that "other" thing? I would contact the body you refer to and get a members list or tell them that this trader is claiming membership and you need proof they aren't to be used in a court case.

Your assumption is correct  I have already contacted the association who the logo belongs to, the logo has been removed from their website, result. :D
