Hopefully I’ve posted this in the correct place- I recently replaced a fence at my friends house and decided to salvage a few of the posts . Over the weekend I cut about 5mm of each side to clean them up . I was told the posts were oak but after cutting I’m pretty certain it’s not oak but I’m left wondering what type of wood is it . The posts are nearly 40 years old and are in really good condition as per photos. There was a very strong smell of possibly tar after cutting and to my knowledge have not been treated since originally being installed. My greenhouse now has this tar smell as the cut timber has been stored within it . So what’s the timber and what’s the preserver -would creosote last for 40 years after 1 treatment- can any members help as I’m curious how this timber has survived all these years.. thanks

Looks very like the larch I’ve been using of late. It has a strong cut smell, but not one I’d say was tar, more just resinous.

@Fitzroy When I said tar it was because that was the only smell I could relate to , it’s just not a smell I’ve encountered before. The wood itself was actually quite dry and didn’t leave any kind of residue on the blade or teeth but yeh a really strong odour given it’s age . Thanks for your reply- I’ve had no experience with larch that I can recall hence my curiosity.
