The first thing I would recommend is to use the money that you were going to spend on a plane and buy David Charlesworth's DVD's on sharpening and precision planing.

You can always ebay them afterwards and turn it back into money again, but the knowledge gained will stand you in very good stead.

Those are good to get started, but it's important to understand if you want to do more work with just hand tools, dimensioning and sharpening will be much more fluid (and much faster), and there will be more of an understanding of what dimensioning means when you're doing work by hand (where it needs to be more accurate than machine work and when it can be less).
