Hi All,

I have a new Triton TWSS10 whetstone grinder, but it does not grind square.

Do I need to do any prep to the machine, how do I do this or is it a set up problem?

Thanks

Steve B

General stuff with any wheel grinder should apply equally to one of these although obviously they cut a lot slower the geometry is the same.

So, is the tool you're grinding mounted square in the jig? Is the rest square/parallel to the face of the wheel? Is there maybe an issue with uneven pressure on one side versus the other?

If it's like the Tormek then you have the added complication of getting the adjustable bar lined up with the grinding wheel. The way I preferred to do that with the Tormek was to rest a phenolic offcut (I seem to remember it was about 30mm thick) on top of the dressed wheel, then lower the bar until it was flat against it, then lock off the bar. I did this every time I dressed the wheel.

I guess it could be a combination of all of the above, are there any fool proof methods to find all that out, other than the uneven pressure.

Hi, excuse my ignorance but what is a phenolic offcut? and would you dress the wheel with an attachment that sliding on the bar.

Also the plastic bushes fitted on the tool holder are really stiff to slid, is there any lubricant you can recommend?
Oil and silicon spray seem to make it slightly worse.

It doesn't have to be phenolic, use anything that's dimensionally stable, flat, and won't take up moisture from the grinding wheel. What you're doing is ensuring the bar and the edge of the wheel are parallel, and ensuring you can re-set the bar to precisely the same distance from the wheel time after time, even as the wheel reduces in diameter over time. That's an important first step towards grinding your tools square.

You could try wax to improve the sliding of the bushes. Wax is widely used in need-to-make-slidy applications, and it works on wood, metal and many plastics.

Thoroughly degrease first, with white spirit and then with meths or acetone if you have them, then smear thinly with paste wax and buff after it's sat a few minutes.
