I recently aquired a Trend T5 mk1 (850w)

On first use, with a 5/8 dovetail bit into B&Q pine, the router cut out or stalled, more than once

I was able to switch it back on each time, but obviously no good

Motor sounds smooth with no load

Anyone any ideas as to why this might be cutting out ?

Thanks in advance

Denis

Hi Denis I have that model tucked away somewhere and used to have the same trouble and had to take smaller bites to stop this.I know you can't do that with a dovetail cutter so I would check the cutter is real sharp first and try feeding the router through slower.
I don't think it's a fault as such more a safety thing to stop burning the motor out.If I remember I checked the brushes to see if that was the problem but they were fine so that was the only thing I could think would cause this issue.

Depends - if you're taking 'half' a dovetail out of the side of something you obviously can just by edging the router closer with each pass; if you're cutting a whole dovetail shape (sliding dovetail groove or something?) then you can cut the groove first with a straight bit which is no wider than the stem of the dovetail bit, taking shallow passes until you reach the desired depth, and then just do one pass with the dovetail bit to cut the angled sides.

Ok gwr - I'll take it to bits and check the brushes

It'll be a shame if its under powered (or over protected) as my cheap performance pro router does a sterling job even if it shows its price tag

JakeS, I am using a dovetail jig, so cutting the whole dovetail shape

Given how hard it is too get the depth of cut right, changing cutters would be a real hassle

Thanks for the replies though guys - I appreciate you taking the time

Regards

Denis
