Hi everyone

I’m currently building a garden seating area and would like to add some trellis work to the back of the seat with a curved bottom. Do you think if I cut a thin 3-4mm thick strip off a length of 4x2 on my bandsaw then I’ll be able to be able to bend it to shape without any fancy steam bending etc? I’ve heard that marine plywood would also work (if it is scored on one side) but that would be a more expensive option.

Cheers guys
Pete

Depends on the slope of the grain and if you have timber with knots in it, it will just snap. But it could be done quite easily if you choose your wood properly.

It also depends on which way you want to bend it too.

did quite a bit of that....custom trellis work for clients....
select as much as poss of straight pine (guessing) without knots.....
cut into strips and leave outside to get and stay damp.....
not diff in the UK....hahaha.....
mine were kept wet under a tarp.....at least a month....
u'll get some breakages but generally u'll get away with it...
my jobs were pre-planed with good lead times.....
also used an air nailer to fix to the main frames.....
mostley no glue....
good thing was working outside and in view got me loads of extra work.....
I quite enjoyed it...
