Sorry this isn't much of a picture but the mark is only just visible and I had a job to get anything much to show in a photo.
It's on and old 17 inch long flat screwdriver. Any ideas as to maker?

Might need a bit of clue here I think?
What do you think it is in the flesh?
Can see all sorts of things including a Bull looking right?

Apart from the Canadian source has anybody else published a definitive list of trade names?

I have been searching for Mansell Tool Co. and Beecroft Butler & Co. without success?

On my first glance I though it might be a lion. Yes, it could be a bull with the face turned sharply outwards. The tail of whatever beast it is seem to have an arrow on the end (devil?) Pity it's so worn.

Ok, here is my collection of on-line resources - and I can't find this one in any of them!

The really useful guide to Sheffield marks that Alf found from (of course!) the Canadian Parks Service - http://www.sha.org/research_resources/documents/Trademarks on Base-Metal Tableware.pdf

A list on the Backsaw site's of firms who didn't only make saws: http://www.backsaw.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54&Itemid=92.

This list from Timeless Tools is especially strong on hedgehogs:

Wolfgang Jordan's site has a database which covers lots of European makers: start at this page:

http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/hersteller/markensuche.phtml and click on Search with just an asterisk in one of the boxes to show the full range.

And don't forget to look in books such as Goodman's British Planemakers.

On a photographic note, I would try taking the photo in darkness, and using a torch, at a low angle ("raking light"), and from various direction w.r.t. the marks.

It might capture more/better data.

I did this one by actually rotating the blade, since the light was coming from a window.

Lordy, I'm starting to dread these trademark queries now... Sorta looks like it could be a bull (Or maybe a Griffin? Based on one in the Trademarks pdf, it'd kinda work as a griffin) facing right, meeting a gate perhaps, in the middle? And then something else facing left - Lion? Devil? Logical pairing would have me plumping for a griffin and lion, 'cos that's practically normal for heraldry. But trademarks? Could be anything - I mean to say, look at those hedgehogs for example.

I think I see a Lion or possibly Leopard (no mane) on the left. Facing one of the mythical creatures Griffen or Dragon perhaps. They appear to be below a Crown and on the left above the head is a Rose.

Thanks for that. I will give it a try :)
