does anyone know of a manufacturer of a heavy duty toolrest. i am looking for a 8-10" toolrest with a 1" shaft. any help appreciated.

Try this page - they've got 25mm shafts. Click "HEGNER" then "Woodturning Lathes" then the "Toolrests" link on the left.

Have a look at suppliers spares lists, Axminster for instance have them,

This (600406) 300mm one has a nominal 1" diam post for instance.

You may find other patterns and quality elsewhere.
