I took delivery of some freshly cut wood yesterday. Unfortunately I have no idea what the species is. The exposed timber is a very pale yellow/white colour. The bark is quite thin and not peely like birch/cherry etc.

It turns well, cuts like butter, and takes a lovely shine.

Yes Sycamore it Turns beautifully wet with shavings like ribbons flying over your shoulder and end up with something like this but they are Beech and Yew

Sycamore is used by French turners to make those Trembleurs (sp?) stems only allowed to be 1.8mm ! and they are about a meter tall, very nice wood to turn with and very versatile, makes excellent foodware items too.

I am currently using up a few logs and branches of it myself, I really like it.

those are absolutely beautiful. One day I hope to be able to produce something as nice as that.

I really must get a space cleared so I can get my lathe.

The fresh cut Holly I have seen has always had a slight greenish tinge to it, especially round the cambium.
