i doubt that stock came from a straight round log as being discussed, but im well aware of the beauty of timbers that grow all around us.

e.g this english walnut i aquired

Nobody`s going to be able to provide a definitive answer, I don`t suppose, but it`s interesting and informative to speculate! It looks like young ash to me too.
Chas, nice work on the "bark chart". Maybe it could be expanded into something very useful. Folks could post their pics of wood which they definitely know the identitiy of.

WOW! That is one beautiful Walnut blank.
How on earth did you come by that?

My stock, believe it or not is made from an Ash I took down a few years ago. Heavily spalted through the crotch which is in the butt of the rifle. The action sits in the straighter trunk grain which is why I'm in the shed making a forend cap from the same Elm crotch I used for the capping on the pistol cap and liner for the air gauge.

I am still convinced that his is from a tree of heaven.
Ash don't have the green cambium layer as depicted in one photo. The bark in the photo on page 2 Deffo isn't Ash.

I might be taking it too far but climbing them every day, it would be good to know that some use has come from it, if only id'ing trees! :)
