Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.

Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons such as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge financial settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on; if not, join the majority and do nothing.

Well said Aldel...but you forgot Common Sense's younger brother, Clip. Clip would be ever present and stop the unruly in their tracks. Known as 'RoundtheEar' to his friends, Clip is also sorely missed...He's been superceded by the Rights family and the Correctness brothers.

but what prompted the email. Please don't keep us in suspense.

Ah, Common Sense may have expired, but this one lives on... Apparently it wasn't quite like that.

Personally I think rumours of its demise are greatly exaggerated. How many newspapers or telly programmes report incidents of common sense...? :-s

Cheers, Alf

Roger,

Having just gone through a very stressful couple of weeks with family illness, death of a friend, petrol price rises, impossible water rates etc, etc, I received that text from a friend and it brought me a smile and raised me from deep gloom. I just thought it about sums up the current state of this country and thought I would share it.

With spirits slightly raised, aldel

And we now do expensive useless rights-based things like prosecuting child-abusers and wife-beaters rather than brushing it all under a nice common-sense carpet.

Aldel,

May I suggest some therapy, get out your woodrat and make us one of those exoctic complicated puzzle joints. :) :) :)

Heres a song from one of our better known hillbilles for you musical types

Rainbow Stew
performed and written by Merle Haggard
transcribed by Phillip Taylor

There's a [C] big brown cloud in the city and the [F] countrys siding with
[C] sin.

The [F] price of life is too [C] high to give up and it's gotta come down
again[G].

When the [C] world wide war is [G7] over and [C] done and the dream of peace

comes [F] true, we'll and be drinkin' that [C] free bubble up and [G] eating
that

rainbow stew.

When they find out how to burn water and the gasoline car is gone, when an
airplane flies without any fuel and the sunlight heats our homes. One of
these days when the air clears up and the sun comes shining through, we'll
all be drinkin' that free bubble up and eatin' that rainbow stew.

chorus
Eatin' [C] rainbow stew in a silver spoon, under [F] neath those skies of [C]
blue;

we'll [F] all be drinkin' that [C] free bubble up and [G7] eatin' that
rainbow stew.

We don't have to get high to get happy, just think about what's in store.
When we all start doin' what we ought to start doing and we won't be booing
no more. When a president walks through the White House door and does what
he says he'll do, we'll all be drinkin' that free bubble up and eatin' that
rainbow stew.

Chorus.

Wish I could. It took me years to find the lyrics and what you see. I was going to see if my neighbor could put it together with the chords listed in the song

Sorry

Hey Slim,

A couple of my favorite songs from growing up (did I really grow up?) were from Johnny Horton. Don't think a few of them would go over well on the UK Forum, though

Now that's aside from some down right hill country and swamp music I still listen to once in a while... I did grow up listening to a wide range of music. I appreciate most styles. My main likes range from blues, to classical, country and R&B. But the main music I listen to is jazz. On a related note (no pun intended), and probably only one person here may relate well, but my favorite female singer to see in person was Nina Simone...

But that's changing the subject--and I wanted to make sure to tell Aldel thank you for the original post. So thank you, Aldel.
