I borrowed a book from the library called "The New Best of Fine Woodworking: Working with Tablesaws" which is typically American - no guards, no splitters/riving knives, hands passing very close to the blade etc (even though it states throughout to use safe working practices)

Then I came across this table saw ripping jig, basically a big lump of wood sandwiching the stock to the fence. Surely this isn't advised?

I certainly would not it, with a feather board possibly but that is just asking for the timber to kick back and hit you in the nuts.
