Whats the shortest length piece of wood you can put through most thicknessers and end up with something usable? I often have small pieces of wood that I'd like to use up.
 
Exactly - a consise response from Davey but that's it. MDF is handy to stick the little bits to as it is reliably consistent thickness. It's also really handy for planing very thin stock (a few mill easily).
 
Any tips for separating the wood afterwards though without damaging the surface?
 
Just gently pull it away

But If there was an issue with removing from the tape then a little something to soften the adhesive like meths (not the drinking grade) should do the trick
