I was surprised when I called Trend to order a dovetail cutter for the DS 400 dovetail jig to find that they have now stopped selling it. A fantastic bit of equipment, that when set and the depth gauges made for setting the cutter depth takes ten mins to set up.
It made me consider what exactly the affect of austerity has had on the furniture maker and home enthusiast.
Ten years ago you couldn't log on to a woodworking site without seeing posts from people starting up in business. All showing there wood working shops and the work they were getting,
Kit was being bought and shop layout photos were everywhere. The Axminster catalogue was so thick that if I fell asleep while looking at it in bed I could have woken up with a couple of cracked ribs....or not at all !!!!!!! Not today. Its half the size.
Many of the stock items have vanished. Branded goods replaced by unbranded. Record too would send out flyers all the time, telling us about promotions, which have all but dried up.
Some of the woodworking shows have packed up. Lack of sponsorship I suppose.
It makes me wonder how lower woodworking equipment sales have affected the economy and supply companies, and how many people have abandoned their dream of working at the bottom of their garden in a shed and returned to a regular paid job.
For sure there aren't the same number of people contributing to sites like this. Some days you just couldn't keep up.
I wonder if it will ever come back? Or infact if it's just a figment of my imagination.???

Its very noticeable also the amount of goods Axminster and Rutlands have.."out of stock". If you don't stock it - you can't sell it !!

Not good for the bottom line.

If you don't stock it, you don't have to pay interest to the bank for the money you borrowed, to pay for the stock, you arn't selling.

Nobody wants to hold stock, unless it's a fast moving item.

Our local ford dealer now has a parts department about the size of a 1960s corner shop. But can have most any part there within 24 hrs.

I am so fed up with Axminster being out of stock that I now use them as a last resort instead of first choice. The situation is worse since they started opening stores, the shops get priority with stock. Great if they are local but no good if you have to travel. Axminsters customer service is second to none their supply service sucks.

Yes...works well for motor factors. However, depressing when you want to but a router insert from Rutlands which is out of stock......"but will be in again 20 June" yes June. Almost 9 week wait !!!!!! What does one do ? Buy elsewhere.

I have a lot of time for Axminster, they ate one of the best companies I have ever dealt with. The 'out of stock' situation is annoying though, Very often when the mail order deep is OOS one or more of their shops have the item in stock. Why can they not send it from there ?

Another point is.....when supplier is out of stock, they should permit an order pending delivery at price prevailing at the time of order. Taking payment at the time of order is not a problem.

Another gripe is having a sale and having "more than 5 in stock" So is that 6 or 600 ?

or how about when you go into axminster and have no stock but it is sitting in warehouse
and wait for over a week and still not in shop to collect

surely they must have a delivery instore on a more regular basis

I believe that the agreements retailers have with credit card processors usually require that they don't take payment until they are in a position to ship, except for custom made or special order items.

When I sell on Amazon I don't get paid until I confirm it is actually shipped (with tracking number if applicable).

Why not? Might be entertaining. :)

I've never had a problem with them, either buying or selling, nor with eBay or any other on-line sellers and I do a great deal of buying and selling on the web.

Just one of the lucky ones I guess :)
