Hello everyone,

I'am trying to find out which type of wood would be the cheapest for building canvas deep frames for gallery wrap.

We have few canvas gallery wrapped wall prints at home and at the back i can see something like wood but looks more like a brown paper bars which is firm almost like a wood. Do any one know what type of material it is? if not, what would be the cheapest type of wood bars suitable for canvas frames? Thank you.

Have a look at some of the bigger art suppliers like 'Greatart' and 'Jacksons'. They sell this kind of stuff, and usually give you a description of the materials used.
Probably MDF though, if it isn't timber.

Their examples look like clear pine. (Canadian Yellow, AKA Eastern White)
I'd just go to a local sawmill, and select some ordinary pine, as clean as you can find.

Go to Atlantis art on Hanbury street, they sell canvas stretchers in several price levels. They slot together and can be adjusted with wedges inside, the canvas is held off the frame by a rounded lip around the perimeter
I doubt you could make them for less

Thank you guys for your help. Yes it was mdf.

I'am now looking at Atlantis website.

If you want to use normal canvas stretchers, give me some idea of the size, and I might have some in my bundle.
