Actually, I do agree with the motives, teaching the illiterate to read IS important, but so is grammar and punctuation, it can change the meaning of what is said/written, and they are not mutually exclusive.

I used to do this all the time, up until my early twenties (probably still do it every now and then), and was picked up on it by someone whose English was their /3rd/ language

To be honest I think it's a fairly easy mistake to make, and I can see how it came about. Instead of saying 'Could have', people obviously say 'Could've', which is easy confused as 'Could of' for a child. At least that is my excuse!

Clearly,the written humour isn't always discerned.I'm actually rather pleased that we seem to be as opposed to abuse of the language as we would be to abuse of our tools.
