Following some excellent comments from members I tried the following to avoid tear out when drilling holes in soft wood

Using two bits of offcuts clamped together I drilled a 3mm hole right the way through (this avoids tear out on the bottom of the first offcut)

Drill a 3mm pilot hole in the wood you want to drill through

Place one of the offcuts over the wood you want to drill through. Use the 3mm drill to line up the two holes.

Clamp tightly

Drill your brad point drill through the offcut and the wood you want to drill through

Result, no tear out on the bottom of the wood, worked for me.

Hope this helps
