Hi my neighbour as asked my to taper a couple of 4 x 2 12 foot lengths of timber on my table saw any suggestions on the best and safest way to go about this
Thank,s in anticipation Mock

several ways
Snap a chalk line and cut with a circular saw ,Bandsaw ,Handsaw etc
Snap a chalk line and attach some straight bits of ply along the chalk line and run them against your saw fence

Mark you're line and cut to it, then use 1 as a taper pattern, Set the fence to whatever width both ends come to, If you were cutting a taper 4"to 0", over 12', then I would set the fence to 1/2 of the saw kerf off 4", to get an even angle and length.
An easier one is if you want , say 3-1/2" to 1/2" over 12' Set the fence at 4", less 1/2 the saw kerf,
These equate to roof firring pieces, we cut thousands of feet and then metres like this

Assuming the taper is 0"- 4"
Set saw bench to 8"
Put the lengths side by side
Fasten one end to keep it 8x2
Use a 4" packer to space other end.
(may need a couple of intermediate packers at this stage)
Now feed through saw
Use first taper against fence with next length alongside to create second with saw set at 4"

Mind you this would give you 4 tapered pieces with 2 of them being a bit undersized.

The presenter is showing you a 4' sheet and you're proposing to cut a 12' tapered "firring piece", or similar,
making 2 pieces out of one 12' length of 4"X 2".

Please watch this vid and save the ply and poncing about, and it'll be safer!
