After years of freezing during the winter months in the garage I have decided to stop procrastinating and get some heating ordered. I have thought about wood burners, lpg boilers ... Both of which required costly installation costs. The split air con unit at £750 delivered seemed like the way to go. Easily installed by yourself and energy efficient too.

I'll report back once it's installed with my verdict.

What about insulation?

If the garage is naturally cold ( I assume because not insulated) then won't any heat you generate be lost almost as fast?

I ask because I had same thought myself but decided insulation was key first.

The garage ceiling is insulated with 50mm celotex between the rafters and the ceiling is plaster boarded. The garage loft floor is also chip boarded.

It is a single skin garage with exterior wood cladding. I could also celotex the walls too.

I don't think it is too bad as when I used to leave a 3kw heater on in there during the winter months it used to stay warm. Trouble is, a 3kw electric heater costs more to run than a 24000BTU / 7.6kw split air con unit. That was also my motivation for going for the unit I did.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of vacuum pump hire to evacuate and test all the pipe work before opening the refrigerant taps. I ended up paying for the installation as vat is only 5% on reversible heat pumps and the makers warranty is preserved where it would poorer with DIY install.
