On my previous lathe you locked the tailstock by moving the lever downwards towards the horizontal. I've bought a bigger /better one from a different manufacturer and to lock the tailstock you lift the handle towards the vertical. It locks at about 2 o'clock. Is this common?
It makes sliding the tailstock easier as the lock is "off": but if the locked lever is knocked or the lathe vibrates, the lever could move under it's own weight. So losing the tailstock pressure!?

Slide the tailstock off the bed, rotate the handle through 180º and then slide it back on. The handle should work in the down position. It will just point forward instead of aft, or the opposite if that how it is now.

The lock works as there is a cam - depending on the lathe, to adjust the locking position you can either wind the locking plate beneath the bed closes or further up the shaft it is on or sometimes the position of the cam on the shaft can be rotated so it locks in your preferred position.
