Anyone recommend somewhere to get spares for a Hitachi H20SA Planer?

I had a good search on google, but it only threw up a couple of results so I thought I'd see if anyone had any recommendations?

Yeah I've been there, and to be honest the Power Tool and Fixing Centre is less than a 100 meters walk from work but......

They seem a lot more interested in pro/trades people and less interested in us lesser mortals.

I have rung them already however, and they are open till 6pm so will pop up this evening.

Been there, done that. Believe me, all it would take is a woman standing next to you asking the same question and they'd suddenly treat you like their best friend. DAMHIKT... You could try planting a handy SWMBO to achieve the same effect? :)

Cheers, Alf

I needed a blade support, not a blade so I needed a "proper" sales and service place.....

Sorted, Power Tools and Fixings in Salfords, just 5 minutes walk from work, have the bits on order - £4 each, but I had to buy a pair.

In by Friday hopefully. And they were dead friendly - I think I'll try going in late in the day again next time, it was quiet, and I reckon I've always been in in the morning before, when loads of people turn up needing all their bits and bobs for the day.

Interestingly, they had a Makita Circular saw on display that came in for repair - only when they checked it - it was fake - £50 out the back of a van - managed just 2 inches of cut before it gave out! Anyway that chap said they are being 'made' in a factory in Ireland, and then 'nice' Irish chaps add Makita stickers and sell them to poor hapless unsuspecting folk.

Be warned, I have already seen fake DeWalt stuff......

Err,

We're blamed for many things but manufacturing Makita lookalikes???
I think not and certainly hope not. Granted, the original "sales person" may have had a bit of an Irish accent.....
End of the day if you buy a tool outta the back of a transit on a dark night what do you expect????

I'm told Makita have a dedicated person looking into the "fake" stuff now, and police have been informed. However, the Garda are looking into it themselves now, and have not yet taken action.
This may well because the factory itself is not actually producing "fake" products - only "unbranded" ones. It is only later in the distribution chain they "pick up" a Makita sticker. However it just happens that they have identical colour and similar shapes.......
Like you say, it's hard to have sympathy with anyone who buys anything out of the back of a van.......

I have a strong feeling there was a warning about this in GWW a while ago. Possibly this time last year in fact. The lure of all those eager Xmas shoppers drawing the faux Makita elves from their Irish grottos I suppose. :)

I'll have you know that some of my best tool deals have come from out of the back of a van. A white one what's more. Lucky for me the only hand tool anyone's ever felt was worth faking is a Stanley #1, and I think one of those turning up at a wind-swept rugby ground in west Cornwall might just cause comment. So there you are; another positive reason to use hand tools.

CYC Help,

It can't be true that there's even a facility for producing power tools in Ireland. I know there used to be some years ago and that was for a branded make.
This all sounds a bit fishy. You think the Englishers are trying to frame us?? Sounds like a set up to me.

PS CYC - If you know about this power tool plant just play dumb....

We had these guys round this summer - white hire van, on Republic of Ireland plates (G-reg, i.e. Galway?), full to the gunnals with DeWalt and Makita stuff - and at prices to make your eyes water (e.g. DW Cordless 14.4 volt drills - £50 or so). The DW cordless stuff looked good but turned out to be Chinese knock-offs with a battery mortality measured in weeks rather than days. The stuff was mainly grinders, cordless drills and saws - although they did have a few Makita heavy plunge routers as well (£125) - if they'd had DW625s I'd have been seriously tempted....... They did every industrial estate round my way, so there are quite a few duff cordless drill out there now. Sorry, Noelly, the accents really were from out west, Mayo I thought (being a mere Brit I can't differentiate so well). Don't know if they are making them, personally I suspect that these are Chinese fakes being offloaded here

There is at least one Chinese company copying some of the Makitas - Jepson. I saw some of their stuff in the States a few years back. At first sight very like the original, but a lot rougher round the edges and nowhere near as well made.

Power Tools and Fixings in Salford - really helpful guys, and as you've discovered to be avoided before 9:30am (morning rush time)! They must be doing well with the demise of BMJ. There are also a few good PT specialists on the North Side of MAnchseter as well, should you venture this way...

Regards

This is Salfords in Surrey, not near Manchester....!

>full to the gunnals with DeWalt and Makita stuff -

The chap at the power tool place said they simply "spray" yellow over the "Blue" makita colour plastic. Voila, DeWalt - not Makita!!!!

In that case you've found another good tool place!

The yellow DeWalt stuff I saw really was yellow plastic, not sprayed, but none of the stuff in the van was in manufacturer's cartons, just brown/white cardboatrd boxes with printed labels..... The only example of cordless I have handled looks very like the DW original, but isn't quite the same, and the plastic seems a lot harder and more brittle, the DW batteries even fit it, but the drill won't run on them because the contacts are in different places! Hmm....

I also, have seen some fake DeWalt stuff - but they hadn't quite got the colour of the plastic right - it was yellow, but with an orange tinge - and clearly just wasn't "DeWalt" yellow - and it was soo light, I wasn't even sure if they had the battery packs/motors in them - perhaps just a bag of sand???

Ahh well, just have to buy from a reputable dealer and you will have no problems......
