Been there, done that. Believe me, all it would take is a woman standing next to you asking the same question and they'd suddenly treat you like their best friend. DAMHIKT... You could try planting a handy SWMBO to achieve the same effect?asleitch":7qibo587 said:They seem a lot more interested in pro/trades people and less interested in us lesser mortals.
I'll have you know that some of my best tool deals have come from out of the back of a van. A white one what's more. Lucky for me the only hand tool anyone's ever felt was worth faking is a Stanley #1, and I think one of those turning up at a wind-swept rugby ground in west Cornwall might just cause comment. So there you are; another positive reason to use hand tools. :lol:asleitch":3uh2xgz3 said:Like you say, it's hard to have sympathy with anyone who buys anything out of the back of a van.......
We had these guys round this summer - white hire van, on Republic of Ireland plates (G-reg, i.e. Galway?), full to the gunnals with DeWalt and Makita stuff - and at prices to make your eyes water (e.g. DW Cordless 14.4 volt drills - £50 or so). The DW cordless stuff looked good but turned out to be Chinese knock-offs with a battery mortality measured in weeks rather than days. The stuff was mainly grinders, cordless drills and saws - although they did have a few Makita heavy plunge routers as well (£125) - if they'd had DW625s I'd have been seriously tempted....... They did every industrial estate round my way, so there are quite a few duff cordless drill out there now. Sorry, Noelly, the accents really were from out west, Mayo I thought (being a mere Brit I can't differentiate so well). Don't know if they are making them, personally I suspect that these are Chinese fakes being offloaded hereasleitch":xso7tbbf said:Interestingly, they had a Makita Circular saw on display that came in for repair - only when they checked it - it was fake - £50 out the back of a van - managed just 2 inches of cut before it gave out! Anyway that chap said they are being 'made' in a factory in Ireland, and then 'nice' Irish chaps add Makita stickers and sell them to poor hapless unsuspecting folk.
In that case you've found another good tool place!asleitch":37unpr0h said:This is Salfords in Surrey, not near Manchester....!
