Straddle Stones for Pergola

I have been been working on a oak pergola which is ready to go together.

The plan is to sit it on staddle stones drilled to take a rebar pin that will fit in a hole drilled in the base of each leg.

At the eleventh hour I am wondering about sitting it on brick plinths instead.

The staddle stones have a slight dome on them which I think will be to stop water accumulating. If this is right and the brick plinths are flat am I storing up a problem?

As an aside timber framing is really hard work but equally satisfying. Hats off to the craftsmen of yesterday who built houses this way by hand.

Generally if you use brick plinths, they are wider than the post and you use mortar to create a fall for water.

I've used clay tiles to make a sloped capping for the top of a plinth before now. Another option is to cast a conical or pyramidal capping stone using concrete in a mould - the steel spike can be cast in situ. Cheers, W2S
