Yes, sorry, my mistake.

I have a solution involving a simply jig and a cutter with a bearing guide at the bottom. However, I've decided that my ballusters need to be 30/ 32mm square, rather than the 25 square that I'd allowed for, so until I've machined up some new stock tomorrow I won't be able to put it to the test.
 
Use a mortar bit, 45 degrees with a flat bottom, hold the stock in a jig at 45 degrees. Square shoulders.

I think that's pretty self-explanatory. Thanks for the suggestions and help. I've now done all 40 ballusters.

It's from all sorts of off cuts and bits and pieces I've had kicking around the workshop for years. I had bought some inch boards for the ballusters, but decided I wanted them to be around 30mm square instead, hence the scrounging. It was quite a lot of work reducing odd shapes and sizes to 30mm square.
