Does anybody know, or have experience of these models please?
As a present for someone, I'm thinking of getting a Mamod from a man whom renovates and tests them, comes with a certificate.
These are the older models which seem to be more robust and perhaps better made.
With thanks and regards Rodders

Toolsntat,
Thanks for you're reply on the steam boiler and the link.
They certainly know their stuff!
many thanks Rodders

If it's a good price, I'd grab it. I was going to get one a few years ago for my lad, and the older ones were going for proper money on flea bay, even ones that weren't that nice.

Seems they're the ones everyone wants, rather than the new ones.

Stu2,
They seem to be about £70. upwards for something tidy which i would hope to eventually drive a generator set,
so this is the slightly bigger model, SE2, I believe.
The postage difference is interesting, from £5.25, to £25.00, for the same size piece!
many thanks for you're interest. Rodders

AFAIK Mamod are slightly looked down on in engineering circles, being considered "toys" not "models".

If you don't know the difference watch "Flight of the Phoenix" (*) next time it comes round on TV. :D

BugBear

(*) not the 2004 remake. Blech.

Morning Bugbear

I don't think anyone ever thought they were on a par with scratch-built stuff that model engineers like to play with :)

I remember as a kid having fun with one, and lots of other kids seem to have them, too, so they sort of were viewed as a toy.

Wish I'd keep mine now. This thread has made me think of getting another one, if I can find an older one in reasonable condition :)

Well, after a bit of research I've bought a restored early SE2 MAMOD for not a lot of money off the internet.
Looks almost as it's just out the box.
Although some old things(like me)! should be left, in this case, an old boiler, the used look can be a bit scruffy and off putting. (If 'Er indoors reads this and see's me going on about Old Boilers, I'm for it!)
Luckily, the seller, an enthusiast, is very helpful and nothing seems too much trouble.
I hope the steam engine is well received, at least I've not spent a silly amount of money and then I'LL have it!

Bugbear, that film has stuck with me and funnily enough, thought of it and the German model designer, the eventual hero
just the other day, Can't always remember the Title though!
thanks and regards Rodders
