Hi Guys,
I hang about mostly on the Woodturning section, however just acquired a 275 and have spent the last 2 days "fiddling and fettling" (great fun).
It needs a new riving knife, the type shown in the parts list with two notches on top to fix the guard to. Is it possible that someone could trace the outline of theirs onto a sheet of A4 with o/a dims. and scan it to me so I can make from a piece of 3mm plate? If so, I can PM my email address.
When I got it home, I was terrified what I might find under the "bonnet". The rise and fall and tilt mechanisms were caked up with sawdust and stiff to operate. After I got the table off I could see that the trunion rail ("C" shaped piece with a v groove inside and outside) was damaged, a piece of the cast iron had broken away on one side of the inner "v" (smallest dia.) at the front side. Looks as if something very heavy had been dropped on the blade and the cantilever effect had caused the damage. I have reversed the plate so that the chipped area is now at the back and it seems to be OK, however, I may have to replace it at some point (spares costs are eye watering!!) This part is only about 20mm thick and seems to be quite flimsy considering the weight it has to carry and is CI not steel. Has anyone else had this problem?
Apart from a few other minor problems it seems "good to go"
Regards
Tudor

Hello
I can't scan it for you, but I can take some photos with some measurements if you like.
Can you not fill the chip with a bit of welding using an allweld rod ?

Hi Giveusaclue
Cant seem to do a hotlink, so not sure if the one below will work.

It is the standard riving knife for the 275
Hi Ttrees,
I assume your first sentence refers to the r'knife and second sentence to the broken trunion? Thought abt welding, but the v then has to be accurately machined!
Thanks both
Tudor

I made a copy of the riving knife that was on the machine ...
It is different than the one pictured
I think Steve Maskery here advises the type shown in your picture, as it cant be flung
if it was ever loose for some reason.
I cannot see that happening though, as the two bolts for the riving knife make a really solid grip.
All you would need to do, is not to cut the slot all the way down to the end.
I was thinking of reducing some meat from the back of it, as you would make a guard shorter in length,
which is probably better for a few reasons

sorry i didn't make myself clear, can you take a picture of the broken part or post a link to the it from machinespares or wherever it shows an image?

Hi Steve, sorry for delay. Below is the link to the "trunion" plate which has a piece broken off. It is the "C" shaped piece with groove on inside and outside. I have more or less cured this problem by turning the plate around to reduce the pressure on the broken area.

Thanks to all for their input.

if you can cope with it that's good, otherwise i would've thought an engineer would be able to do something with it if you can't source a replacement, a bit time consuming, but possible
