I have a Startrite 14 S 5 with a rectangular extraction port. I have scoured the interweb to find a coupling for this so that I can connect it to the round hose on my extractor but can find nothing. Can anybody help me with this ? I have thought of turning a section to fit the hose leaving a square section to then cut and chisel out to fit the rectangular port but that is going to take hours! There must be something out there, these machines were made in great numbers and they must have had a coupling that could be bought off the shelf.

All you need to do is make a rectangle to fit the port and screw a disk or two to it with a hole cut in it.

Pete

The port is 63mm X 35mm external and 57mm X 29mm internal. Steve I dont know the size of the hose to the extractor as I have not picked it up yet but as a guess I would say about 120mm.
Thanks for your suggestion Pete, that would certainly be easier than the one I had in mind but I would rather get a purpose made one off the shelf if they exist.

Gosh, that really is a very unhelpful design, isn't it? What on earth were they thinking? We have an old startrite at the Community Workshop and it, too is appallingly designed - we need a bespoke allen key to adjust the guides.

I was going to suggest the same as Pete, but you don't have much room at the bottom, do you?

TBH I'd be tempted to cut it off and fix a round port in its place.

Edit: Actually, can you simply put a round port over the existing one?

I like both of those ideas, I could just cut it off and fix a standard extraction port to it.
I have seen these rectangular ports on lots of Startrite machines but I have never seen one with a coupling on but they must exist.

I think the simplest solution would be to take pattern using card or something similar and take it to the local sheet metal basher. It shouldn't be too expensive to get a nice adapter made. I recon you will get away with less than £30.

Possibly worth looking in one of the sheds for the sort of ducting used with kitchen/bathroom extractors. They can use rectangular section ducting which is easier to fit through a wall, but since most fans have circular outlets, there are rectangular to circular adaptors available. Don't know the exact sizes, but from memory they could be about what you are looking for.
