Hi all
Just broke a totally rusted frog adjustment screw on an old boot sale No 5 that I'm having a go at
Have managed to drill out the bit in the hole quite nicely but I don't know the size and type of the thread to retap the hole so I can find a spare screw.
Anyone got time and one of them there thread gizmos and an old No 5 to check for me please? I believe they are Whitworth or somesuch.
Cheers
Martin

I thought it was stanley plane thread, seriously. Slightly different than whitworth. I think i may have a spare screw tho, is it the one with the large head and the groove running around it, ythat the u shaped bit sits over?

Confused myself now

Whitworth! Hah! You should be so lucky. Apart from very recent models, all planes used bizarre, custom threads.

Just to make joy complete, there is a little variation between manufacturers

This means you are MOST unlikely to have the right tap.

To answer your direct question, I measured the screw from an old (broken, kept for parts) Record #4 1/2,

measured OD = 0.248"
measured TPI = 24.

1/4" BSW is 20 TPI
1/4" BSF is 26 TPI

B****r!
Can I get away with running a 'close enough' die that I have a matching tap for down the screw somehow?
What would you do please?
By the way could you tell me your opinion of my replating exercise on my old 46? OK or sacrilege?
Regards

I'm no metal working expert, but trying to coerce a 24 TPI bolt thread into being a 20 or 26 sounds doomed, I'm afraid.

What have you done to the hole? If you've just drilled away the old screw, you haven't (yet) done nay damage to the casting.

One of the suppliers that I get some of my model engineering bits from has 1/4"x24 tpi taps and dies listed in their catalogue under "Brass, Cycle & Special Pitches" so you could rethread the casting and make a matching screw :D
