just to be contrarian... I sharpen mine flat across at 90° and turn a burr on both sides just like a card scraper. that way I have a fresh burr waiting at the flip of the blade.

works for me.

What's not working, there are shavings aren't there? Discard the notion of "proper shavings" and you have no probs.

Must have. I thought the point was to flatten wood but you seem more interested in the shavings. How was the wood?
