I have just received a stanley 45 from ebay. It seems in usable condition, which is what I bought it for, so no complaints there, and cost me.

But...

I bought it to run some small beadings. Unfortunately the 1/8" beading cutter is missing (Stanley cutter no 21). Does anybody have a spare knocking about- it is a notched one if that makes a difference. Also missing the no 23 and 24 beading cutters if anybody has a part set.

I have plenty of straight cutters if anybody is lacking and wants to trade, or some beer tokens.

Hopeful...

Mark

I can't help you with a spare one, but if you get desperate, a new Clifton one will fit. At least a couple of Cliffie retailers stock individual multiplane cutters. Cost you quite a few of them beer tokens though...

Cheers, Vann.

well i have a few but i dont know what you mean by a notchced one (blade adjuster notch?), what width are the 23 and 24, and is that overall blade width or width of bead it cuts you mean?

I think it is a blade adjuster notch. I just noticed that one listing on eBay specifically mentioned it. The other 2 are 1/4" and 5/16". I assume that all measurements are the radius of the bead that it cuts.

Thanks

The first version had no blade adjuster, just tap the blade with a hammer to adjust. I have an 1/8" radius bead and a 1/4" radius bead, although im fairly sure beads are measured by width or diameter. So I have a 1/4" bead and a 1/2" bead. Look on the dealers on Alf's site, someone might have a set, worth getting i'd say.

Your welcome

i will have a measure of one that is labelled then and compare with the catalogue size. it is the very smallest that i needed, but it might be possible to use the next size up. I am wanting to make some hockey moulding with the rounded end being about 8th- if i was to use the next size up it wouldnt be the end of the world, and it probably wouldnt be that noticeable.

One of the advantages of the Stanley #45 (and the similar Record #405) is that the method of clamping the blade enables blades from most other combination planes to be fitted. Here's a blade from a Stanley #50 (the short one) next to a blade from a Stanley #45.

And here it is fitted to my Stanley #45

The cutter adjuster screw obviously doesn't engage with the shorter blade, but the cutter is easily adjusted by tapping it gently with a small hammer.

This facility makes it relatively easy to pick up odd blades to fit the plane.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Paul

thanks Paul. I had looked at the 405 and the 55, but hadnt thought that the search could be wider still. Is it possible on these planes to make your own cutters, a heavier duty scratch stock for want of a better expression?
