The hammer tip on my early 42x was no longer making close contact with the anvil. I had purchased new replacement springs thinking that would resolve the problem but that didn't help. The fault was the actual length of the tip. Or lack of to be more precise. I had an Eclipse 77 saw set in very good condition just gathering dust in the workshop. So I pulled it apart and noticed that the parts I needed were of very similar dimension. Hmm. Guess what. They are perfect match. The parts I am referring too are the large outer sleeve, the inner piston(hammer), and both the springs. Swapped these parts over. Tested out the my 42x. Sweet as. (hammer)

Now there's an excellent justification for having more than one of any tool!

Um, excuse the stupid question please, but why try and mend the Stanley when the Eclipse was 'in very good condition'.

The Stanley has a different grip angle to the Eclipse, and for some it is more comfortable.

Because I have 2 other Eclipse 77s in the same condition. They are easy to find on ebay here in Aust. at a low cost. The Stanley #42x are much less common and command a much higher price. The #42x has some design differences to the anvil that make it more straight forward to use on high tpi handsaws. The only work required is to file the front of the hammer to a finer tip. That's the primary reason the #42x is so popular amongst those who sharpen their own backsaws..

regards Stewie;

They say it's no good getting older if you don't get wiser. I'm a day older, I'm also wiser. :)

Only trouble is I have a whole new world to explore #-o

To illustrate, here's my two, the top picture the anvil is as standard, bottom pic the anvil has been filed down to fit finer tpi saws
