has anybody tried this method of cladding your old stairs it seems a good idea but not that cheap. kits on offer work out about£500 so any advice please :?:

I clad a stairs many moons ago, long before I had any machinery. I clad the risers in a layer of ply then veneered ply this packed the risers out so that they were flush with the nosing of the treads. I then had a local supplier machine up some hockey shaped boards which actually proved quite economic. It was then just a case of carefully cutting and planing each tread to size and fixing it down. It is still going strong 15 years later.
Whilst doing this I also clad the stringers. I made up a cardborad template and cut out the thinest veneered ply I could find. I fitted this before doing the treads so that they covered up any gaps.

It would help if you said what sort of cladding you mean!

Our basement stairs were worn and scruffy. I had some offcuts of good quality engineered flooring (10mm softwood + 4mm oak) and some 4mm veneered ply. I used the thin ply on the risers. For the treads I routed a rebate and joined a strip pointing down to make the same sort of boards as JamesC. I glued everything in place with Gripfill which meant I could build up where there was wear. Ten years on and it's still looking good. I could find some photos if this is what you want.
