But here's the thing, it doesn't always react with Oak either. If you're dealing with freshly cut Oak there'll usually be sufficient surface tannins to get a result. But if the Oak has been sitting round for a while then the staining will often be patchy at best.

That's why, no matter what timber you're dealing with, it's best to charge the surface with tannin. Ultra strong black tea is a simple and convenient solution, ground up Oak Galls gives an even stronger reaction.
