If I stain garden furniture can I then put some kind of oil on it to protect it from the elements? If so do I have to have a certain type of stain and or oil?

Although I’ve not used oils etc for garden furniture is see no reason why you can’t. As for the best types others here will have better advise. Of course you can use exterior varnish which will fully waterproof your furniture.

Thanks Bingy. I didn't really want to run the risk of varnish flaking.

Marine or yacht varnish won’t flake if allowed to fully dry between coats . Did a bench recently and the sun was on it part of the day and applied 2 coat next day with no issues. A lot of members on here quote osmo oils as decent.
