I bought a record bobbin sander because I needed (wanted) to.

Very disappointed. even at the low speed of this, its incredibly easy to sand a circular gouge out of any thing you apply to it. And I can almost count the revolutions on that. Trying to slow a router down enough.... uh uh.

Its my least used machine. I find I can sand circular stuff easier by hand.

This might be closer to what you want;

Yeah - I will probably end up just using that. But I really like the idea of being able to reuse the space on the router table, as opposed to the small area on the bench press (without hitting the post)

But I would like to know why slowing the router down wouldn't work.

depending on the router, you could be talking about rotation up to 30,000 rpm.

A drum sander works best around 1,000 rpm. Slowing a router down to 1 /30th of its speed will not do it any good at all. Its simply not made for it.

What are you sanding? compound shapes? flat pieces? each has its own best method.
