Wanted to use up the end bit off a walnut log that had been cut off to show me the better wood underneath.
I was a bit tired and it wasn't until I looked at the photos I realised I hadn't faced off the rim :( Never mind I leave the mortice there as it is easier to polish wood after it has dried properly.

very nice wood and just the right amount of spalting

it was rotten in places, so I turned off all the very soft white stuff but stopped when I couldn't dent it with my finger. As usual the wood dictated the shape.

I think and hope the rest of the two logs are much more sound. Have to say turning in the centre on good Walnut was a pleasure it seemed to only take a few minutes for me to be up to my knees in shavings, and they smell nice :)

I like to keep all the "Character" of the original wood, sometimes it works, sometimes they can look rustic or clumsy.
