An interesting tip I picked up on the Aussie site, (Tony won't need this one though)

Furrings:

They are just 1X2 ( 3/4"X 1 3/4 ). they are for mounting on surfaces like brick walls allowing you to nail dry wall to the strips.

With these strips attached to the side of the wood plank, when you run it through your thicknesser, the furring srtips will get the snipe on it and your wood will not, ( as long as they stick out past the end of the plank, ) This trick works by lifting the rollers and cutting head to the posstion they would be in in the middle of the plank. When the board leaves, the cutting head will not drop ( causing snipe ) until the attached strips get to the end.

Will give it a try.
I added 2 extension metal plates to the base of my EB which should help a bit.
