Hi all,

I recently purchased some English Walnut from a farm. The timber is lovely but it has absorbed the farm smells... basically it smells like pig manure!

Do you guys know of any way of getting rid of this smell? Is it safe to just wash down with detergent or would this cause further problems e.g. swelling?

Thanks!

There is a product that you can buy to get rid of dog smells. We moved in a house once that had a conservatory that had been used as a dog kennel. Timber floor (all mahogany) had to be ripped out and burned, the joists were coated with the 'stuff' and the smell went instantly. I imagine it would work, but don't know how it will affect the wood for making with.

EDIT:

Here ya go: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PET-ODOUR...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item2a27f3d0e1

leaves a pleasant Pear Drop fragrance.

So how long does the stench of ketones hang around after use? ;-)

Can't answer that one, we used it or something similar on floor joists. Might be worth a search for an odourless one. When we bought the house the smell met you at the front door, from the conservatory at the back. As soon as we used the stuff it went completely. we put new chip board flooring, then carpet down on the joists and lived there 10 years and never had the smell come back.

What's wrong with the smell of pig manure  ?
Seriously, I'd have thought that just letting the timber sit in free air circulation for a few weeks would get rid of any smell; the odorous compounds can't have gone in that deeply into the wood, can they? Or was it coated in pig s***?

This is certainly worth a try..., I'll have to erect some sort of cover. The piece is 2 metres long and weighs an absolute ton! Took two of us to get in in the house, and then my wife and I plus a trolley to get it back out again because of the smell! I might also chop a piece off the end to experiment on.
