I've seen the AW128PT from axminster on sale and before I go ahead and purchase it, I wanted to know if there were any others that you would recommend at that price?

I don't want 2nd hand.

I don't want 3 phase with a convertor.

It MUST be single phase.

I don't want 2nd hand as I don't trust how it's been handled with potential of twisted/damaged beds etc.

Thanks

Hi,

I would recommend that you look at the Scheppach HMS260, but a lot depends what you expect of the machine. The Scheppach seems to be good out of the box, the Axminster might potentially be bigger and stronger but may need a certain amount of fettling to get the best from it. Actually, I am disappointed to have to say that, but I use both regularly, and the Scheppach is always the preferred choice particularly for thicknessing. I don't there's much in it for planing.

If Axminster could offer a fettling and setting up service after the machines arrive from China they'd have a winner. The APTC one I use was 2nd hand, and I suspect that the original owner never got it going properly as it did take a bit of work to sort it.

I just replied to another thread about adding a digital readout to a planer - I think the Wixey should be considered an essential add-on.

regards,

Colin

See if you can get a deal on a Startrite SD300, although it might be a bit more than you want to spend it is a good machine - solidly made and suitable for trade use. Before getting it I had an HMS260 which was good but I wanted longer tables and increased cutting width. Scott and Sargeant have two on ebay so you could try and make an offer on one.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look.

The Startrite looks good, if I can knock the price down a bit.

How about the Record PT 300? Very similar design apart from the fence and thicknesser table (4 corner pillars rather than 1 central).

Thanks again
