Being new to woodworking since too many years ago, is Scrolling' like fret working? I had a treadle fretsaw as a child, some 60 years ago and modern scroll saws seem to be similar, with a motor ? If it's something different, please clarify.

Scroll sawing is the American term for fret sawing but has gradually come into use here. No doubt one of the main reasons is that all books and magazines on the subject are American, or at least all the ones I know of.

Thanks guys, thought that may be the case. Interesting machines that seem very versatile. I certainly like the way the blades are so quickly unclipped and attached again ......... Quicker than a sewing machine.

Fret saw work, grew up and was rebranded I think by the hobbyists in America. Fair do, that they should re name the hobby, as they seem to produce 99per cent of the publications. One thing not to change however is that the blade will continue to cut where you steer it, and not necessarily where you want it to cut. That makes me fret! Good luck, buy a saw and start cutting some wood.
