As the title really, Somebody I know is in the market for a mobile shop vac come dust extractor. Power take off and fine air filtering are a must. I suggested the trend, hes been looking at the festool. Anybody have any preferences either way?

I must admit I'm interested in this too, I'll need something for the garage/workshop when its sorted and I have also been eyeing up a ts55 for a cross cutting set up (ala Ron Paulk) instead of a radial arm, maybe a matching extractor would be nice.

I have the Hitachi (which I believe is identical to the Trend) and the Festool Midi. I would not like to be without either, but if I really had to choose I'd choose the Hitachi. And I am a Festool fan, generally.
The one thing the Fessy has has that the Hitachi does not, however, is variable speed and this is very important when attaching it to a sander. At full blast the sander is simply stuck to the workpiece. The body vibrates like mad but no sanding gets done...

Festool , trend doesn't come anywhere near it.

Also if he can get hold of a £50 off voucher he could get a midi for as little as £180 at the moment online.

+1 more for the Festool.

I've had the TS55/CTL Midi combo now for about 3 years and I still think it's the best.

If you don't need to move the vac around in your car boot, then I would be tempted by the larger Festool vac with the overhead arm for the pipe.

Thanks for the input folks, much appreciated. From a fair bit of reading it seems theres not much wrong with the trend (good reviews) but the trade do seem to go festool, barring price there wasnt much moaning about it and obviously it fits in/functions with the rest of the festool bits.

Cheers :)

I have a Fein

(mine is a slightly earlier model). Had it for five years and use it all the time; it's still going strong. I like it a lot and would highly recommend it. Personally I wouldn't pay festool money for an extractor unless I had all the festool gear — it's all supposed to work as a system and I can't see the point of paying extra for the extractor on its own. I'm sure the Trend would be OK.

I think Trend and Fein are the same basic machine. I have Nilfisk and Festool. Nilfisk is good, Festool is in a different league! I disagree that you need the Festool system to enjoy the advantage of the extractors. I have a lot of Festool and don't regret a single purchase but I also have Metabo, Fein, Dewalt tools that I still connect to the Festool extractor and it works great.
