Hi -

Was following previous discussion about mitre planes and shooting boards, and finally remembered to bring in batteries for the camera...

The pictures below are of a shooting board we recently acquired...

Cut capacity is 3 3/4" inches (plane is 4 3/4" wide, and 23" long!)...

I'd guess it weighs about 75 lbs.

It's a Millers Falls 1882 patent.

No gloat though - it was expensive!

So when can we expect the improved Veritas model, then???
best regards
Philly :D

Hi -

That was fast! :)

No promises on this one... but we aren't exactly ignoring it either. If we do it, it'll be able to handle compound angles....

Cheers -

Oooo, nice. Very nice. A Rogers Miter Planer if I'm not mistaken. Fabulous condition too. Yes, I'm going green with envy here. Just think how many circular depressions and brass knobs you could get on one of those, Rob...

Cheers, Alf

Not bad Alf - a 14 minute identification, and a link to boot!

And it is, of course, the Langdon Company box...

Have to find something harder for you in the future!

You mean, 13minutes59 seconds to find the post, 1 second to identify it?

Well it was a 2 second identification - it was the first reply getting swallowed that took the time.

Yes please, can I test the prototype? Where do I send the cheque?

Okay, I've only just seen this a 7.20pm, before you all start in on me :p It would have to be a woodie, wouldn't it? Not my specialist subject by any stretch, but let's see. Best guess: Ebony, ivory-tipped, centre wheel plough. Flashy thing, and probably 'Murrican (decide for yourselves if those two things are connected... ) Can't quite make out the stamp on the toe, which is mildly frustrating. :( Sandusky, mebbe? (WAG) Can't believe someone actually used it, but the wedge suggests they did. Heigh ho.

Cheers, Alf

P.S. What's up, Rob? Wouldn't you stump up for this one?

Well Alf - we actually did take a run at it - but it sold for exactly twice our maximum....final price was $104,000 US + 10% buyers premium.

You did pretty well - it's a Sandusky Centre Wheel Plow - ebony, with ivory tips... all original 'cept for one tip (with initials on it). As far as we know - it's the only known example. This one's a production (special order) plane - not an exhibition plane...

 You are, of course, insane. Just not as insane as the eventual buyer...

Really? That's pretty cool. Does it work okay? Or isn't it the done thing to have an itsy-bitsy play with one-of-a-kinds, just once? Purely to see if, say, the extra weight of the ebony improves the planing experience, for instance...

Anyway I'm off to run round the house going "Yessssssss" 'cos I was right, more or less. :D This could do terribly things to my ego.

Cheers, Alf

I should have checked in sooner. I knew both of these.
Clarence Blanchard sent out a postcard with a picture of the Sandusky plow and I am framing it since that will be as close as I will get to the real thing  .
Wes Groot has one of the Rogers Miter Planers and I've been dreaming of one ever since I saw it.

We (note the plural...or is it the royal?) may be insane - but we were justifiably so.... we could have used it to draw vistors to our stores. It most likely would have paid for itself...

As for using the one we have...nope. The risk is just too high...I figured we could get 30K+ for it before - I have no idea what it's worth now (we'd never sell anyway)... 'course, we do have a reproduction that's never been used too....it was putting the repro on the cover of our catalogue that caused the original to surface.

Shame we didn't buy this one either, we had offered....but then it was stolen....

Ah well - be interesting to see if it ever surfaces again....I venture it'd go for a fair whack more than $104K... even if it isn't a centre wheel....

Cheers -

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought most woodworkers needed additional incentives...

Regarding the original mitre trimmer that started this thread...

It puts into perspective all those so-called-expert-galoots who keep asking for a #51/#52 combo from a modern maker :)

They just have no ambition.

IIRC there was a British trimmer that was similar, but had a lever handle (more like normal cast iron mitre trimmer) to drive the captive planes.

LOL  I'd always thought it was pretty ambitious to expect a modern maker to make any kind of shooting board/plane combo, but now you put it that way...

Gosh yes, that does ring a bell. Can't for the life of me recall anything more about it at the moment though. I must have read/seen about it somewhere, so if I look long and hard enough.
