I didn't watch it (it's too long) but I gather he is a bit over fussy about flatness. Otherwise it should only take half a minute to sharpen and hone a new chisel freehand, ready for use. Never easier than when they are brand new.

Oh all right - for those who want to believe it - it's not easy and you should spend at least an hour per chisel!

Think i got to about 0.5 second in, saw it was paul sellers and turned him off :D

Actually I have just bought a set of chisels from Rutlands (sale) under £10. four sizes starting at 1mm, yes 1mm 2, 3 & 4mm.

I will let you know what I think of them in the spring.

I assume they are mortise chisels then?

I could do with a 1/8" mortise chisel.....

Have you got a link?

I quite liked it.
He doesn't try and tell you that you need this that or the other like some do.
It's simple and to the point.
It's aimed at noobs and those who don't really care for sharpening that much (me).
I saw it and though, "yeah, I can do that without getting bored"

It's very similar to AndyT's post about cheap chisels.

I don't use my chisels that often and so can't justify spending lots of money on Ashley Isles type chisels.
This shows that it can be done and suits my budget.

The only problem I have is a short attention span with videos on YouTube, especially when they guy has such a boring monotone voice.

I've nothing against "cheap" tools, I'll always try to experiment. OK, I may lose a few quid but if I can provide the necessary information to prevent others making the same mistake then it's worth it :)

Which reminds me, I have my bargain basement #3 and #6 planes to play with. Maybe tomorrow if the weather is cruddy.......

The aldi chisels are great. Easy to sharpen and hold an edge.

So - What would be the best way to sharpen them  :!: (hammer)

Those small chisels from Rutlands

They arrived nicely packed yesterday in sealed sleeves.

The shafts are around 4mm thick and 140mm long, the blade portion is around 6mm long, very dinky. Sharpening would most probably be done on wet and dry, I certainly would not put them to a revolving sharpening stone they would definitely dig a groove in a wheel, perhaps a sander disc if serious regrind was needed.

I will use them when I need to do a little tickle and a quarter inch chisel would be too chunky to work with

Roll on the Spring (around end of April) must sneak some timber into the bedroom to season
