Sharpening back saws.

This is a question for Pedder, posted here so as not to divert a thread.

Peddar, in a different thread lie-nielsen-saw-problems-t56997.html you gave this advice
"to all: you must be very carfull to side dress cross cut teeth, because side dressing affects the hight of the cross cut teeth, too."

I have not come across the term 'side dress' before. I wonder if you would take the time to explain, or to point me to an explanation please.

hi,

instead of the term "side dress" the term "stoning" is used often. It means to hone away some amount of the side of the teeth (to reduce and even the set and on cc saws to sharpen a little bit). I use blocks of hard wood wrape with g600 sand paper, so stoning seems to sound wrong but people use files and stones, too.

You can do similar trick on a band-saw if it's wandering off a bit

Pedder, thank you. That is what I guessed, but had to check. I do not sharpen many saws, mainly rip teeth, but have found 'side dressing' helps to ease the cut.
