I've recently fettled my Freud handheld planer (240V version of the one above), bringing it back from the dead, as previously the front plate wasn't parallel to the rear one

I now need to re-set the knife height grub screws. I can do this (I thought), and tried the hopping-block trick (at either extreme end, the knives catch a wood block and pull it forward a small amount).

It didn't work - square planing but lots of snipe - it's obviously too much projection. Back to the drawing board.

It's a pain, as the blade tightening bolts and the height grub screws interact slightly - as you tighten up after an adjustment, things move around!

I wasted several hours the other day not getting it right (to where I am now). There's obviously either a trick to this or a special jig used in manufacture. I suspect they're set to align the knives exactly with the rear soleplate (you get ridges but presumably no snipe that way). I'm probably wrong though.

Can anyone give me any hints? Better still, are there instructions for, say, a Festool one that might be applicable? The Freud came with nothing useful in that department (and unsurprisingly, I don't think they sell planers any more in the UK!).

I'd hate to chuck it out but I'm running out of patience and enthusiasm! Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,

E.

Not sure if it will help, but just googled freud handheld planer and amongst the few pics of the freud. There were plenty of pics of the same machine in makita livery. The makita version may offer some help?

In my humble opinion its not worth spending too much time on a leccy planer, after all its a chippy tool for quick work when you need to shoot a door in or butcher a frame. My cheapo Bosch has one double sided knife that takes 30 seconds to change and requires no aligning.

Ahh the woodrazor blades, i too have a bosch planer with that system. Will never go back to the twin blade type :)
