Evening Gentlemen, new member in need of some advice .

Last year my stepfather passed away from cancer, he was an engineer and alway enjoyed working with tools, the last few years of his life was spent making wooden bowls down in his blue shed.

My mum has decided its time to move his tools on, my brother and myself was going to have a go and learn how to use the lave but i now have anther baby on the way and not much time (now im rambling apologies). so to my point one of my mums friends has expressed interest in buying the lave, the tools and wood, i looked and priced the lave around £200/£240 going by one that sold on eBay. The friends husband offered £200 to which my mum agreed he then said "with some of the tools and the wood" now i think he's taking the Micky and my mums one of these people that just agrees with people and in embarrassed to talk about money so can you Gentlemen give me what you think is a fair price that i can go back to this man with .

1) Axminster M900 woodturning lathe
2) chucks and drill bits
3) 15/20 pieces of wood ect
4) varies robert sorby chisels
set of 5 micro woodturning tools
round nose scraper
roughing gouge
box scraper
easybeader
anther long one, i dont think these have ever been used .

5) ferm band saw
6) titan 16" scroll saw

any help appreciated i have some pictures, if i can work out how to upload them i will .

£200 is probably a bit light, but the lathe itself on a bad day may make only 150 on ebay, less your costs for selling it. The chucks may have a bit of value, but unless you are going to list exactly what you have on eBay, they are not going to reach their full potential. The wood probably wouldn't raise much- depends what it is, and the tools as a job lot may make 100. Again, it depends what they are and how many. The information that you have given isn't much to go on, but eBay should be able to guide you if you work out what you have.

In short, selling on eBay might make a bit more, but by the time that you have factored in the selling costs and your time, you may only be looking at another 50-100 quid. Job lots of equipment tend to be better value for the buyer.

If it were my mother, I would probably make a counter offer of £300 and see where you get to. But if it is a friend, and you have no use for the stuff, it may be easier to get rid. You may have some good quality tools- in fairness to the buyer, he may not be aware of what he is buying, and just value a lathe and some tools at what he has offered. it sounds like he is wanting to get started, so looking for all that he needs rather than deliberately taking advantage.
