While I'm waiting for the engineer to bore out the seized pivot and turn a new one I've taken everything else apart, even the motor. Can anyone tell me what's the best grease for the motor bearings? What was on them was thick brown stuff, like peanut butter, pretty dry.

These are open bearings, so usually, I just replace with sealed bearings that have "life" lubrication.
In your case, I would pull off the bearings, flush them out and apply a standard bearing grease.
If you can't pull the bearings, place some rags behind the bearing and use your fingers to force new grease through. Rotate the bearing as you do this, until you have fresh grease showing on the other side. Wipe away any excess grease that might end up on the windings - and you're done
