Morning all,

I've recently become the owner of a Sedgwick 571 Morticer, it's a Mk1. It's in good nick but I had to disassemble for transport so I'm going to clean off all the old lube/grease and reapply before assembling.

The question is what to use where? From what I can see there are a few key points for lubrication.

- Rise and fall head slide
- Counterweight chain
- Table slides
- Table rack and pinion

From disassembly everything is caked in a thick greasy mess. This seems to show all the slides were greased, which seems odd. Can someone with machinery knowledge make some recommendations please, ideally using more commonly available lubes. I've some generic grease, and some 3-in-1.

TIA Fitz.

The 571 is a great machine. Nice purchase.
There are a two or three grease nipples that supply the chain and arm lever, these are for oil not grease. They are usually clogged with grease!
Everything else should be lubricated with a dry lube such as white lithium grease. Do not use oil or grease as this attracts wood dust and creates a great grinding paste.

Thanks. Will this do?

Do not use high performance white lithium grease. It solidifies at low temperatures and makes things bind up. Use standard, normal Lithium Grease.
