I have built a desk and a mirror frame from some iroko , the grain was quite interlocked and could not be made clean with a plane , a woodwork book advised using a scraper which I have bought but the books intstructions on how to sharpen and use the scraper are muddy at best , Do I need to buy a burnisher ? what is the burr , is the scraper then sharpened over this burr in the same fashion and angle as a chisel ? Any info would be great , cheers

I'll say up front, I'm guessing here as I've never worked Iroko, but would adding a back bevel to your plane blade help here?? I reckon a combination of higher angle of pitch combined with a skew action might well improve things. This of course assumes the plane has a good tight mouth.. if not, you're right... scrape it...

Far be it for me NOT to recommend planing, but Iroko can be a real pain. A ROS can make your day a lot easier.....
This is a good opportunity to learn how to use scrapers though-so get stuck in!
Cheers
Philly :D
