Hi!

I'm a complete newbie, not just to these forums, but to woodworking as a whole
- so any advice for beginners would be HUGELY appreciated!

Onto my questions, I'm trying to get hold of 'scrap' wood for practise purposes, but am finding it hard to get decent quality wood to experiment with (most scrap wood is plywood etc.) Is there a good place to find cheap small pieces of assorted woods?

Also, does anyone have recommendations of where to buy wood sheets less than 0.5mm in thickness?

Thanks!

search eBay for veneer- standard veneer is 0.6mm. less than that is probably not available.

Thanks - yep, I've seen 0.6mm on Amazon, was wondering if less was possible!

what are you wanting to make with such thin pieces? i doubt that you will find anything less- it it is critical, a few seconds with some sandpaper will reduce it.

Just found this, looks brilliant - they even have a 'thin' pack.

I am looking to make wooden wall hangings, almost stencil-like, with cut-out details. Will bear that tip in mind though, thanks!

SIngle layer veneer is extraordinarily weak - you might need to rethink.

Thanks BugBear, you've saved me some headache - back to the drawing board! :)

Glue two layers of thin veneer together with the grain off-set by just 15 or 20 degrees and it's astonishing how much more robust it becomes. I sometimes do something similar for making up very fine stringing lines.

Thank you so much custard! Please explain what you mean by 'with the grain off-set by just 15 or 20 degrees', I'm a complete newb so would really appreciate it :)

Just like the grain runs from 5 o'clock to 11 o'clock on one sheet, and 7 o'clock to 1 o'clock on the next. Each sheet then effectively stops the other breaking along the grain.
