I went last year and it was my first woodworking show. I have to say that because I am not into turning I was really rather dissapointed :?

Maybe I was expecting more discussions on cabinet-making and design. Instead it was manufacturer after manufacturer trying to sell their thing. Maybe it is just not for me - I go to a lot of conferences for work and actively ignore the trade floor.

Can anyone convince me why I should go?

We're abouts is the show guys

Ingliston - otherwise known as the Royal Highland Showground, or Edinbugh Airport.

I was hoping to get to the Harrogate show this year, not having been for a while, but it's not going to be possible, so the Scottish Show is a bit of a consolation prize for me. With the Club 55 rail ticket, it's not too expensive an outing...

I hope to be there on Friday.
I know that Andrew Hall, Margaret Garrard and Tony Wilson are demonstrating (turning). There are also various turning clubs scheduled to be there.
If you`re not into turning it will largely be a tool browsing (or buying) experience.

Hoping to get there on Friday. It is a bit small and so not got a lot of buzz. I would be a bit disppointed if came a 100 miles but then we do things for not a lot of good reason........ I did pick up a show offer of a new drill driver a year or two ago.

Hello Gents,
The show is a bit wee and not as large as Harrowgate but its generally well visited, i've been a couple of times and not been disappointed. It is mainly woodturning but yes lots of tool manufacturers Ashley ills, Sorby, Inver and record with lathe kit, Engineering agencys etc.
There are usually quite a few clubs attend again turning but one at least has a quality carver, who demonstrates most of the day both days.
I have on both occassions managed to save a fairly considerable amount of money by attending. Quality Hs steel doesnt ken its not new and the second hand tools there last year proved a superb bargain for me.
Hope this helps a little.

So did anyone go today how was it

I was there today. It was largely as described above, very similar to previous years. Worth a visit if you like turning and/or don`t have too far to travel.
I did notice quite a few stands, especially power tools, where the staff were standing around chatting amongst themselves, or staring forlornly into the distance.
I don`t suppose the weather encouraged folk to have a day out.

Spent a couple of hours there Friday. Travelled by bus/train from beyond Aberdeen, so the whole day, door to door, was 12 hours! Not an efficient use of time, but cheaper than driving for one person.
Impression was much as others; some interesting stands, some quite good turning demos, but not many buyers around. It's a shame, as it's the only show in Scotland now. In the end, it's a vicious circle - fewer stands, so less interesting, so less people go, so fewer stands........... show stops.

Ye was pretty good lots of stand some deals to be had good demos but way beyond me the guy was making wooden hats like cowboy ones but had a good day I burst all the reps heads ha ha

Hello Gents,
Yep I was there yesterday and it was I agree a little quieter than last year, still some good stuff going on and quite a few clubs represented the turning demos where pretty good and because it was that bit quieter got a chat with Tony Wilson about lathes. He showed me the photo of him sitting on his Wadkin lathe!! What a beastie!! its the lathe he uses at home.
Had a look at second hand steel not a lot there for me but got good deal on finishes and wire wool and some ideas to play with.
It was worth it for me and my wife enjoyed as well.

Must admit my hat comes off the the man that travelled from Aberdeen, got to be keen to do that.

All best all.

The advantage of retirement is that time isn't tooooooo much of a problem! And if you are over-55, and don't mind being restricted in the times of trains you can use, then the current Scotrail Club 55 offer of £17 return between any two places in Scotland is a lot cheaper than driving.
Mind you, the actual journey shows how lousy travel planning has been in Scotland - train from Aberdeen goes within 1/2 mile of the showground, but you still have to go in to Haymarket and get the airport bus back. Why the h*** could they not have built a station there rather than spending £szillions on the still-not-working tram system? Then when you get back to Aberdeen, rather than the bus station being part of the station as it used to be, you have to fight your way through 1/4 mile of "retail centre" to get to the new, draughty, concrete replacement bus station.
End of rant, which should really be in the off-topic forum (before mentioning building the airport terminal at Dyce on the opposite side of the runway from the train station.......... )
